The United States is at a crucial turning point. You might say it’s being torn apart. Mob rule seems to be standard procedure for the left today. In addition, everyone knows that if “politicians are moving their lips, they’re lying” as the old joke goes. But, bearing false witness to achieve one’s goals should be a non-starter, yet that’s another method the left is now employing to win. Likewise, the rule of law and due process is under attack, and leftist billionaires are spending millions to subvert our immigration laws trying to ensure a new, imported underclass will vote for their preferred candidates. If that weren’t enough, it’s clear that our mainstream media is merely a propaganda organ of the left. In fact, if you caught the recent Presidential briefing after the midterms, you were treated to the likes of Jim Acosta and April Ryan rudely peppering the President with accusatory statements, not questions. They have no shame. And then there’s Hollywood which is intent on corrupting our culture with the gay and transgender agenda headlining nearly every TV show and movie they release. Oh there’s so much more, but that’ll do for now.
If I haven’t convinced you that our country is in serious trouble, then this podcast may not be for you. If, on the other hand, you are as dismayed as I am by the state of affairs, then I’m glad you’re here. Welcome to Be the Light! My name is Rita Phillips.
Who am I? I am you. I’m not a politician. And, I’m not a theologian. Far from it. I spent 34 years as a middle and high school teacher in the public school system. I am a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. I am also a born-again Christian.
Maybe you’re like me. I’ve spent my lifetime keeping my thoughts to myself. Most of the time because I was surrounded by intolerant liberals who find it incomprehensible that anyone would admit to being a conservative. At times, I’ve raged internally or ranted about the state of our country with like minded friends and family members. I’ve listened to talk radio for years, not because I take my marching orders from the hosts, but because finally I found individuals who voiced how I felt.
But lately, I feel God is calling me to do more. We have reached such a level of insanity that upright citizens are being physically attacked and assaulted simply for wearing apparel supporting their political leaders. Senior citizens are being verbally assaulted and threatened by black clad thugs claiming to be anti-fascists, yet their very actions ARE fascistic. Conservative speakers invited to college campuses are verbally and sometimes physically attacked or prohibited from speaking. All conservatives are deemed racist, xenophobic, and deplorable by the left.
Enough is enough. People, we need to get on our knees and ask the Lord for help for this nation. The Bible says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
Look, I may be a Christian, but I am also a sinner. Until very recently I have been unwilling to give up some bad habits, but through prayer God is delivering me from those addictions. It has been humbling. I’ve rediscovered my Bible, and I try to seek God’s guidance daily. That’s all God wants. He wants us to turn away from our wicked ways. Another way of saying that is, he wants us to repent.
We need to pray for our country, our Congress, and our President. Maybe you’re not the biggest fan of President Trump’s. That’s okay, but let’s see what the Bible says about honoring our leaders. Romans 13 says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”
That’s pretty strong language and very clear. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to suffer God’s judgment.
Oh, and yes, God wants us to pray for those on the other side of the fence, too. We may view them as our enemies, but the Word of God is quite clear about praying for them. In Matthew, we are told, “But, I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” So, you might ask, why should we pray for those out of control hoodlums? Here’s why. Praying for people can change their hearts. Personally, I’d rather work with reasonable individuals than unhinged people, wouldn’t you? Prayer can do that.
Please join me in praying for our country.
Father in Heaven. You are holy and merciful. Thank you for sending your son Jesus to die for our sins that we might be saved. We ask you today to heal our country from this terrible strife. Help our leaders to carry out their duties with total respect and regard for the American people whom they represent, and for the Constitution they have sworn to uphold. We also ask you to protect our leaders during these tumultuous times. And Father, we pray for those individuals who would divide the people of this country, for those who riot in the streets, destroying property and assaulting people. As your precious son said as he hung on the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Lord, give us all hearts of flesh rather than hearts of stone that we might respect one another even if we don’t always agree on issues. We ask these things in your precious son, Jesus’ name, Amen.
